In recent years, numerous innovative food recovery initiatives have arisen to confront the challenges of food waste and food insecurity. One prominent effort is the development of food recovery networks that link businesses, farms, and non-profits to redistribute surplus food. For example, the Food Rescue US network has connected over 3,000 food donors to local non-profits, rescuing millions of pounds of food each year.

Technology also plays a crucial role in food recovery. Apps like Too Good To Go and Olio enable users to purchase surplus food from local restaurants and grocery stores at discounted prices. In 2021 alone, Too Good To Go claims to have saved over 45 million meals from going to waste, while Olio users have contributed to over 1 million food saves. These platforms not only minimize waste but make food more affordable for those who may be struggling.

Additionally, as part of "gleaning" initiatives, volunteers gather leftover crops from farms after harvests. These programs have made a tangible difference; for instance, the Gleaning Network in the U.S. reports recovering nearly 8 million pounds of food annually for food banks and shelters. This not only provides fresh produce to those in need but also helps farmers reduce waste.
